Two new full-service grocery stores are opening their doors this week, one in Fort Garry, the other in Transcona.

On Thursday, Save-On-Foods will open new franchise locations on Regent Avenue at Kildonan Place shopping centre and on Pembina Highway at the Pembina Crossing strip mall.

"Winnipeg has fully embraced Save-On-Foods and we could not be more excited to offer our customers more of the products and unique service they’ve come to know and love," said the British Columbia-based company’s president Darrell Jones, in a statement on Tuesday.

"We can’t wait to give all of our customers in Winnipeg the best shopping experience in the West with the opening of these two beautiful new stores."

The new storefronts are the first locations in the city for the supermarket chain to be announced in nearly five years.

Three outlets opened in 2016: on McPhillips Street at Northgate Shopping Centre; on North Town Road at Bridgwater Centre; and on St. James Street near CF Polo Park mall.

Save-On-Foods touts itself as Western Canada’s largest grocery retailer, with 184 stores and over 22,000 team members across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon. The company has opened around 40 stores in the last five years alone.

"We’ve been hard at work to get this store up and running, especially with how difficult and different things have been with COVID," Kildonan Place store manager Nick Taylor told the Free Press. "My team is thrilled that our grand opening is finally here and we’re just so happy to finally have a store in this part of the city."

"I know I speak for my entire team when I say we can’t wait to open our doors and welcome our new neighbours to this amazing new store," said Alex Speckman, store manager for the Pembina Crossing location. "We are excited to share this fantastic shopping experience with them and strengthen our relationships with our customers and community."
